If we didn't have skin, our organs would oxidize like a peeled banana exposed to air. But skin does SO much more than provide a layer over our bones and organs. It is also functions in these ways:
Metabolic- maintains constant body temperature by regulating moisture loss
Sensory- gathers sensory information
Immunological- protects from disease
Skin is highly complex in structure. In just one square inch there are 78 yards of nerves, 650 sweat glands and 65 hair follicles. Imagine drawing a one inch box and trying to fit that many things in it. Incredible!
Most of us don't respect it like we should. It is often overlooked and forgotten. But our skin cools and warms us, eliminates for us, and sends messages to our lymphatic system to fight bacteria, and allows us to feel sensations. It is permeable, yet resists invaders for us.
Skin is a sensory organ that must be attended to. It is not an entity unto itself but is closely linked to body functions and overall health. Skin is married to the body. There is no separating it. Skin looks its best and does its job well when overall health is achieved. It takes proper nutrition, exercise, and rest to produce a glowing, healthy complexion. There's no magic potion in a bottle or jar that can achieve this intended harmony!
Feed the skin what it needs today. (Hint: it's not always just slathering on a topical product, however pure and lovely the ingredients are!)
