Skin's Friend: Salt

Skin's Friend: Salt

It's so common and right under our noses all the time that we sometimes miss the incredible benefits of salt! (Epsom salt, to be precise, which is magnesium sulfate.)

Getting sufficient amounts of magnesium is important for many body functions: digestion, the nervous system, hormonal regulations, blood sugar levels and sleep cycles. But unfortunately most everyone is deficient. Many believe it can be absorbed transdermally, and boost the body's magnesium levels.

It can also help us manage stress since the magnesium helps to produce serotonin. Serotonin is our friend. It's a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that can help creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. What a perfect ritual just before bedtime!

SOAK

Soaking in it can help the body in these ways:

Relax muscles

Detox the body

Help regulate blood sugar

Improve energy levels

Reduce inflammation

Soothe sore muscles and joints

Taking an Epsom salt bath at least once a week is a good practice to encourage detoxification and maintain good energy levels and healthy sleep cycles.

SCRUB

As a body scrub, salt can benefit in these ways:

Exfoliate- as we age, the dead skin cells get thicker and accumulate. It's important to use an exfoliator to slough off old skin that causes the skin to appear dull. This makes room for radiant new skin!

Regeneration of new skin- with the old gone, it encourages growth of new skin cells. This provides a beautiful canvas to maintain moisture in the deep layers of the dermis.

Increase blood flow- fluids in the skin get awakened and the blood begins to flow on areas that are being exfoliated. This helps produce a healthy glow.

Antibacterial qualities- salt is a natural antiseptic which can help calm certain inflammatory skin problems.

We are so blessed to have salt so easily accessible. Don't miss out on this mineral that has so many health uses!
