Our immune system doesn't know when it's flu season. Our internal patrol system is continuously fighting off pathogens no matter the season. Sometimes we have to fight viruses, bacteria and parasites harder and perhaps experience a symptom; even develop a fever. But the fever is not necessarily the enemy- it's just showing that our immune system is doing it's job. The immune system is our hero. We must give it what it needs.
Simple and affordable ways to boost immunity.
RAMP UP SPICES AND HERBS
Ginger, clove, cinnamon, cumin and turmeric are so anti inflammatory. Herbs also contain beneficial micronutrients. Add more generous helpings of these to your favorite recipes.
SKIN
The skin is our bodies' first line of defense. It has special cells that can warn the body about incoming germs, plus glands that can kill some bacteria. Staying cleansed (but not sterile) and remaining moisturized are important for immune health.
SLEEP
Our bodies don't produce as many infection- fighting antibodies while we are in sleep depravation mode.
VITAMIN D
Sunlight! In the winter it's not as easy. The bay windows in my house provide a little sauna if I catch it at just the perfect time of day. If you feel some sun shine on the skin... stay there for a moment and bask.
NUTRITION
The foods we choose should be high in nutrients. Getting our vitamins through food determines our overall health.
CARE FOR THE GUT
About 75% of our immune system is in our gut! It's like the command center where bacteria and immune cells communicate back and forth. Boosting foods rich in probiotics can increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in our guts: healthy yogurts, various kefirs, home brew kombucha and various other fermented vegetables.
EXCERCISE
Release the hormone that makes you feel good! Even those who don't have access to a gym can get creative with movement. Never underestimate the power of a brisk walk to clear the mind and get the blood flowing.
CULTIVATE A HEALTHY MIND and HEALTHY STRESS LEVELS
What we think affects our entire physiology. Unhealthy stress levels cause poor sleep quality, which hurts immunity. Worry causes an increase in cortisol levels which then causes poor sleep, which proceeds to weaker immunity. We can avoid that vicious cycle with simple brain training techniques. Replacing toxic thoughts with life-giving truths is hard at first, but the brain is like a muscle. As it get stronger, the body follows it into the positivity zone.
EXPRESS GRATITUDE
Being thankful actually releases dopamine and serotonin in our brains, triggering happy emotions and good sleep.
Small upgrades DO matter. Choose to change the menial daily things... ones that feel insignificant. Use them as starting points to a healthier YOU.
