Emotions and Changing the Brain

Emotions and Changing the Brain

Do you ever get tossed about by a tidal wave of depressing thoughts and emotions ? Did you know that past experiences, memories and the emotions attached to them form our long - term mindsets ?

Mindsets affect our perceptions of real- time situations.

Scientists tell us that we can change our brain. It takes about thirty days of intentionality, but yes, if we focus...we can ACTUALLY change the physiology of our brains! This is something called neuroplasticity.

It's important to resist creating an identity out of emotional experiences. Emotions can be little tyrants, and we can't control what we feel or when, but we can be free from their control. For instance, it's possible to struggle with low self esteem for a short season, but that does not mean we should identify our selves as being a low- confidence person.

Here's one way to change our brain: identify the current state, then speak out the truth. For instance, "I am a patient person who is having an impatient moment. Because of this opportunity I can grow." Internal statements like these help us identify our feelings in a current moment, but also keep the focus on the DESIRED state, similar to stating a goal. We state the fact, but move toward the truth. This way of thinking can shift our focus and eventually change our brains and emotional experience. It builds a new operating system and it's done by disempowering the negative thoughts and beliefs. Our brains will learn and change based on what we imagine and rehearse. Give your computer new code to read. Feed it the correct data and see how it can change or grow! The body and emotions will follow the brain. Eventually.

You are powerful. More so than you realize. You can change an actual organ of your body with a mere thought!

Do you love learning about the brain? What is something you know about how our brains operate? Where did you learn it? (I enjoy the research of cognitive psychologist Dr. Caroline Leaf, whose work I referenced in this post.) Please share your thoughts and ideas!
